Rolling Coverage is an open-source liveblogging plugin from Newspack. Readers get updates on a developing story without reloading the page.
I contributed several features to the plugin.
What I worked on
- The Rolling Coverage block
- Breakout posts, which turn an update into its own article
- Live polling that doesn't move the page while someone is reading
- Archive mode for coverage that has ended
- Ads, analytics, structured data, and push notification integrations
The part I liked most was the polling. New entries have to show up without the page jumping while someone is halfway through an update.
It was a great project to be part of, and I learned a lot from it. The Newspack developers and team were amazing to work with and always generous with their time and help.
The plugin is maintained by Newspack and released under the GPL-3.0 license.
